Sounds like youre on top of the situation especially seing as the father wont be around be be complicating things.
Its understandable that he wants to add his two penneth to the debate but when he's basically not been around as much as you then its obvious he's gonna have a limited viewpoint of milos development and problems.
It also sounds like he's put you through the mire with the birth and that its all still pretty raw with you. Its always good to talk about these things with friends and Im sure you have plenty of those but youre also lucky enough to have this blog in which to let off some steam!
Good luck with your next appointment, im sure it will be a lot smoother! And keep your head up youre doing great!

I completely agree that one of the reasons so many of the kids you know here need sppech therapy because of their bilingualism but I figure that if the therapy (which I believe will actually be fun for Milo) helps stop Milo feeling so frustrated then it can be nothing but a good thing. As for the development check, I would actually say that Milo is more mother-tongue German then he is English so I don' think that was the main problem for him. His pronunciation is poor in both languages.

I am starting to wonder about the whole speech therapy thing here as it seems that an awfully high percentage of people I know here are being required to take their children to speech therapy. We were told last year that orla needed to go, and I am already guessing that hamish will be the same. It just strikes me as odd that of the 5 expat women I know that live in the very close surrounding streets to mine 100% of them are taking their kids to speech therapy. (And I would be too, if I'd gotten round to it). My ownfeeling is that when they have their development check when they turn 4 it might have something to do with the fact that they have to do it in german. I could be wrong of course, but it could explain why a 4 year not using their native language doesn't quite pronounce things right.

Hey Beckie, thanks for your comment. Yes, the Denglish mix is super super cute if not a little confusing at times ha ha.
Yes, a number of the kids are bilingual German/Turkish but the Ezieherinnen are very strict with the language and the children are not allowed to speak their 'other', non-German language at the kita. No Turkish allowed, so I don't think that's the problem. There are also more 1 language, German speakers in Milo's group then not and all the other kids, except that one mentioned, speak great German no matter their background. It really is a matter of pronunciation with Milo. I think because his speech was so delayed, he got used to being able to communicate with noises instead of words and so he tends to try and keep communicating that way and still uses alot of noises. With me, he doesn't get his own way when doing that but it's a very slow process and as he's at Kita 8 hours a day and then I only have him 60% of the time and he sleeps a lot of that, I don't get much chance to work with him on it. Looking forward to seeing the progress the Dr's will make with him, I reckon too that they'll have a quick effect on his speech. Exciting.

It's just a thought, but are most of the children in his nursery from turkish families? I ask because it could be that he's not learning german from his peers properly. my daughter's bi-lingual too (german/english) and surprisingly pretty advanced in speech, but I think what really got her english spot on was when we first moved back to the uk (she was mostly speaking german before that) and she started going to nursery where all the kids speak just english (albeit with a brummy accent ;) )
They're so influenced at this age by their peers and learn as much from them as they would from the parents and the Erzieherinnen (don't know the english word either... nursery nurses?)
I bet you see a big difference after his first session straight away - mine needed help in learning to crawl - we went to one baby gymnastic session and she was off! it's amazing what a little bit of input from a 3rd or 4th party can do!

My oldest had speech therapy at 3, he quickly learned to pronounce the sounds he had difficulty with correctly. I was quite amazed at how effective speech therapy is.

I'm a single mum of a gorgeous 7 year old daughter. It's not easy, but I'm also not living off welfare, nor do we live in poverty. My ex husband pays no child support payments at all and doesn't see our daughter. I work hard to make the mortgage payment every month and pay my bills on time. Together, my daughter and I care for a vegetable garden in which we grow much of what we eat, which saves us money and teaches her healthy eating habits. Yes, I work part-time during school hours in an office for meagre wages. But I also work very hard after my daughter has gone to sleep on accepting freelance writing work. I'll do anything it takes to make sure my daughter has a good, happy, healthy life - but I'm also determined that I set a good example to her by having a strong work ethic. You don't have to be a statistic if you don't want to be. But you do have to have courage and determination to step out of your comfort zone and make it happen.
